An award-winning, successful and growing digital academic publisher of primary source archive collections in the arts and humanities, is seeking a Development Editor. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a fast-paced environment and passionate team to drive the commissioning of content and development of resources for students and faculty. Reporting to the Senior Development Editor you will be responsible for generating new project ideas and shaping new products in close collaboration with academics, librarians and editorial colleagues.

Key responsibilities

  • Generate new project ideas and act as the lead editor for new digital projects
  • Visit archives around the world to research and select appropriate primary sources for new projects
  • Develop projects and commission new content to a high standard
  • Meet with faculty and librarians on a regular basis, build academic networks and relevant contacts to assist with the development of new project ideas and the commissioning of new content
  • Carry out market research on new project ideas and conduct surveys of competitors’ digital resources
  • Prepare detailed proposals and costings based on your research
  • Collaborate with archival partners to licence primary source content for resources
  • Develop ideas for enriching the content, added value and functionality of the resources in collaboration with academics and manage a peer review process
  • Develop projects to the point of readiness for handover to editorial production teams
  • Attend conferences to grow academic networks and conduct market research with occasional opportunities to participate in external presentations.

Ideal candidates will have experience in editorial or related roles within publishing with demonstrable experience as a successful project manager. Experience in building strong internal and external professional networks and partnerships is essential. Educated to undergraduate degree level with an enthusiasm for humanities and social science subjects, candidates will have advanced research skills in this area. Excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain strong working relationships with a diverse audience is essential and confident decision makers with negotiation skills and an excellent problem-solving approach will thrive in this role. Suitable candidates will have excellent attention to detail and have strong organisational skills which will help manage complex workflows and multiple projects simultaneously. Creative approaches to commissioning new content, a strong commercial market awareness and additional language skills would be advantageous.
