Managing Editor Biomedical – Open Access

Our client is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to join their team in the role of Managing Editor Biomedical. As one of the most successful global academic publishers our client is at the forefront of promoting ethical and impactful scientific publishing. In this position, you will play a pivotal role in managing a diverse portfolio of open access journals, while also driving growth, ensuring high-quality peer review, and fostering relationships with key stakeholders.
Manage a small list of open access titles, with responsibility for contract negotiation, financial management, and product health
Hands-on journal development, including establishing annual journal strategy, editorial board development, article-level commissioning, special collection development, and relationship management
Building specialised scientific knowledge of allocated subject areas, primarily in the life sciences and/or preclinical fields
Selecting and inviting peer reviewers; working with external editors and internal
Managing editors to make final accept/reject/revise recommendations and decisions
Making decisions on manuscripts as part of the peer review process
Achieve specific growth targets while emphasising ethical peer review and publishing practices
Achieving acceptance by key indexing services
Driving impact factor growth
Driving revenue growth via increased submissions of APC-paying manuscripts
Participation in department projects and communities of practice.
Managing Editor Biomedical: Skills/experience
Hold a biomedical background, preferably at the MSc level (PhD or MD is a plus)
Possess a strong understanding of biomedical research principles, research ethics, and reporting standards. A background in the life sciences or a preclinical field with expertise in clinical study types and/or preclinical methodologies (e.g., molecular biology or biochemistry techniques) is highly desired
Experience in editorial roles within the field of journal publishing, including involvement in peer review and manuscript decision-making
Exhibit excellent communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including senior academics
Demonstrate the ability to establish and nurture mutually beneficial relationships with journal editors
Possess a proactive, growth-oriented mindset, strong commercial awareness, and a deep understanding of Open Access journal publishing practices
Be willing to travel for conferences, both within the UK and internationally
Show a high level of motivation, with the capacity to work both independently and as part of a tightly-knit team.
