The key responsibility will be to lead on journal development and collaborate on annual strategies and contribute to the growth and ethical standards of publications.

Managing Editor Medicine: Key responsibilities

  • Lead comprehensive journal development, encompassing commissioning of articles, solicitation of original research, special collection curation, editorial board establishment, community building, and relationship management
  • Collaborate in the formulation and execution of annual journal strategies, working closely with an internal team of editors
  • Cultivate specialized scientific expertise in designated subject areas
  • Curate a pool of peer reviewers, collaborating with both external and internal editors
  • Oversee Section Editors to provide final recommendations for manuscript acceptance, rejection, or revision
  • Play a vital role in decision-making within the peer review process
  • Manage existing open access titles and facilitate the growth of editorial boards
  • Achieve specific growth objectives while upholding ethical peer review and publication practices
  • Drive the enhancement of impact factors
  • Foster revenue growth by encouraging increased submissions of APC-paying manuscripts
  • Actively participate in departmental projects and engage with communities of practice.

Managing Editor Medicine: Skills/experience

  • A biomedical background to at least MSc level (PhD or MD is preferred)
  • A firm grasp of the principles of biomedical research, research ethics, and reporting standards
  • A background in oncology or other clinical/preclinical disciplines is preferred
  • Ideally, experience in journals publishing in an editorial role, including experience with peer review and/or making decisions on manuscripts
  • Strong administration and project management skills
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills and confidence in working with both internal and external stakeholders, including senior academics
  • Talent for establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with journal editors
  • A proactive, growth-focused mindset, good commercial awareness and a strong understanding of the Open Access journals publishing business and processes
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise effectively
  • Willingness to travel to attend conferences, both in the UK and internationally
  • A high level of motivation, with the ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team.
