Managing Editor Medicine – Open Access

An exciting opportunity for a dynamic professional to work for one of the most successful global Open Access research publishers as a Managing Editor. The key responsibility will be to lead on journal development and collaborate on annual strategies and contribute to the growth and ethical standards of publications.
Lead comprehensive journal development, encompassing commissioning of articles, solicitation of original research, special collection curation, editorial board establishment, community building, and relationship management
Collaborate in the formulation and execution of annual journal strategies, working closely with an internal team of editors
Cultivate specialized scientific expertise in designated subject areas
Curate a pool of peer reviewers, collaborating with both external and internal editors
Oversee Section Editors to provide final recommendations for manuscript acceptance, rejection, or revision
Play a vital role in decision-making within the peer review process
Manage existing open access titles and facilitate the growth of editorial boards
Achieve specific growth objectives while upholding ethical peer review and publication practices
Drive the enhancement of impact factors
Foster revenue growth by encouraging increased submissions of APC-paying manuscripts
Actively participate in departmental projects and engage with communities of practice.
Managing Editor Medicine: Skills/experience
A biomedical background to at least MSc level (PhD or MD is preferred)
A firm grasp of the principles of biomedical research, research ethics, and reporting standards
A background in oncology or other clinical/preclinical disciplines is preferred
Ideally, experience in journals publishing in an editorial role, including experience with peer review and/or making decisions on manuscripts
Strong administration and project management skills
Excellent relationship management and communication skills and confidence in working with both internal and external stakeholders, including senior academics
Talent for establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with journal editors
A proactive, growth-focused mindset, good commercial awareness and a strong understanding of the Open Access journals publishing business and processes
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise effectively
Willingness to travel to attend conferences, both in the UK and internationally
A high level of motivation, with the ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team.
