Senior Publishing Editor – Scholarly Publishing

A leading independent academic and professional publisher is looking for a Senior Publishing Editor to join the Editorial team to manage a portfolio of journals to develop the quality and financial performance. Key responsibilities

  • Actively manage journal editor performance, establishing and implementing best practice for manuscript submission, peer review process, revision and resubmission policies
  • Actively manage the profitability of assigned portfolio of journals, implement activities with other departments and external partners to ensure action taken where necessary to make improvements to financial performance
  • Compile and assess key data and metrics, using this data to inform recommendations on each journal’s development strategy
  • Negotiate editor and society contract renewals, produce profit and loss statements, prepare draft contracts and lead contract approval process through to contract signature
  • Lead journal editorial board meetings and represent publisher at conferences
  • Liaise with other departments to ensure that the journals are produced, marketed, and distributed in an appropriate way and within acceptable costs
  • Where required, be responsible for handling acquired titles from contract through to publication by coordinating with other departments to ensure necessary actions are completed on time
  • Support senior colleagues as required with departmental projects and tasks
  • May include responsibility for managing a Publishing Editor.

Suitable candidates for this exciting position will have previous experience in running journals, ideally at an academic or scientific journal publisher. Demonstrable interest in and commitment to higher education and academic publishing. A thorough understanding of the journal publication process and industry is required. Excellent communication skills are essential with the ability to deliver presentations and communicate information clearly and confidently. Strong project management skills are essential enabling multiple projects to progress within tight time frames in a dynamic environment. Ability to identify, advise and act appropriately on ethical or legal questions relating to publication. Proficient in standard IT packages.
